Glenmorangie for Kier Scotland

The project for the Kier Scotland was carried out at the Glenmorangie whisky bottling plant in Livingston, valued at approximately £350,000 and ran from February to September 2010.

The completed work involved creation of 1900m2 of fire break and 1300lm of two hour fire walls to voids 85m2. The project also included intumescent painting of 1500m2 to achieve one hour protection in the office area and two hour fire protection in the bottling plant.

Project Description

The work comprised of creating two hour fire compartments by firstly cladding all the I beams in the block walls using 30mm Vermiculux boards and cladding in the columns with 50mm Vermiculux boards.

The haunches at the top of the walls were also clad with 30mm vermiculux to a minimum distance of 1700mm, once this had been done a fire barrier was constructed using a grid system designed by Promat which consisted of 45mm C channel tec screwed to the purlins then the top hat section screwed to the c channel.

When the grid system was completed the structure was encased with 2 layers of 9mm Supalux screwed at 300mm centres and the joints between the boards break bonded with a minimum overlap of 600mm.

Two hour fire walls were constructed at the top of walls 2.1m high with the construction of these involving 70mm metal stud partition with compression joints top and bottom. These were then in filled with 70mm Rockwool slab and covered both sides with 15mm Supalux sheets. Some of this walling had to be demountable to allow access and egress of plant and equipment.

Penetrations in the walls had also to give two hour fire protection and this was achieved by using ablative coated batt and intumescent mastic to both sides.
